Well, this should free up some cash for Stadler (or is it Waldorf?). George Gillett is selling his 80.1% stake in the Montreal Canadiens as well as the Bell Centre (the team's arena) and the Gillett Entertainment Group (the team's promotion company). The deal is said to be worth $550M.
Here's the fun part. The Molson family—yes, the beer one—is buying it.
No, we're not becoming a hockey blog but this probably has something to do with LFC and its debt.

This would be a record for a NA franchise right ? Molson already has a sponsorship with the team (molson is a sponsor of the inside of bell centre) so it makes sense.
For a straight sale? Not sure.
But McNair paid $700M for the Houston Texans. Not the same as buying an existing team, still that was the cost of the last franchise the NFL 'sold.'
I forgot about new franchise costs, good call.
I'd also like to point out I made the above post at a bar, because the intricacies of hockey franchise purchases are more appealing than socializing with humans. I hate myself.
but that's a large part of your charm, Georger. We wouldn't love you otherwise
/we still don't love you
Actual non-new ones that might top it - the Red Sox to Henry, and the current effort to buy the Cubs, though that hasn't been finalized, but it was supposed to be $800 mil + (rumored).
Also, I've tried to resist doing this, but I can't:
PR: No, we're not becoming a hockey blog but this probably has something to do with LFC and its debt.
jjf3: ummm, YA THINK???
also, while I don't miss the verification words, I do miss their occasionally weird ESP-ness - like "shins" for the JT straight red...
"we still don't love you"
*cries into can of cake frosting*
if its dark chocolate, you ultimately win...
this has nothing to do with LFC, but whatever.
What am I supposed to do about the games tomorrow? Both are at the same time! Watch USMNT lose pathetically to Egypt, or watch a potentially enticing Italy-Brazil game? I need advice here. Flip between both? What will UF be doing?
/pig roast drunk.
//read this post like 5 times to make sure it made sense.
Can't speak for UF, but I'm watching Italy-Brazil while dvr'ing the US match on the presumption that Egypt will sweep the field clean of the useless, uninspired crap that is the US team...
Find a bar with good views of multiple TVs and be really nice to the bar staff so they might put two of them on the channels of your choice.
I'm rooting for Egytp this afternoon. Before the mob arrives on my doorstep...1) I was just there, hanging with the local soccer nuts having an awesome time...2) I'd rather see Egypt advance over Italy...and 3) Well lets face it, they're going to win anyway, so I'm hoping for a goal fest rather than a dull game, purely for the entertainment factor
Bugger..."Egypt"
