There's No Dancing in Football!

Cheerleaders in Happier Times.... Just moments before the NASL collapsed.

Ginge Talks the Footy blog passes along unofficial word that FC Dallas are planning to have a dance team this upcoming season. Because thee MLS isn't a big enough laughing stock on the world stage, and because it's always a great idea to emulate the old NASL.

The Celtics waited to hire cheerleaders until after Red Auerbach died, so couldn't MLS have waited until after America's soul has died? In fact, I think it died a little right now.

And yes, this is two MLS posts in a row, which I believe ties our record! In other MLS news, official announcement that Vancouver has landed a team is happening today

Update after the jump....

Turns out I was a little unfair to poor FC Dallas, because it has been pointed out that some European teams have dancers. This includes Bigus' Norwich, although they are on hiatus this season (both the dancers and the football club harharhar). Here is the visual proof:

And yet, I still have a feeling that MLS is going to be a laughingstock on this one.

isn't there an EPL or fizzydrink squad with a "cheer squad"?

Norwich have cheer leaders. They used to then stopped it but this season they are back!

Well, well I stand corrected! Still find it embarrassing though.

They are not on the side of the pitch at a throw in, screaming..But they dance before the game (if that's what you can call it) and at half-time.

There's a difference between a dance team and cheerleaders, isn't there? Dancers don't usually do the whole annoying distracting sideline cheer thing while the game is going on.

This is all really strange. I've got nothing against them (I'd be a bit of a hypocrite if I did) but really, keep it to American football.

i was really surprised to show up with third-row tickets at the Reebok last year and find that Bolton Wanderers had cheerleaders. They didn't seem to be doing much, but they looked for all the world like your typical pointyball cheerleaders. Seems pretty pointless in soccer, since such things were meant for sports which waste so much time doing something other than playing.

Have you forgotten about the Chivas Girls and their wonderful wonderful calender? Also, I believe South American teams like Boca and River have dancers as well.

Finally, good to see the creation of MLS dance teams get top billing over, you know, the creation of actual MLS teams.
