Word has started to filter out from multiple sources that Fox has usurped Champions League rights from ESPN.

UPDATE: As noted below, everything has been pulled everywhere.

I'm so used to having Iraqis call games that I think I'm immune to bad announcing. Except Tommy Smyth, getting rid of him will be a godsend.

I just find it hilarious that ESPN was all 'oh yeah we are looking into expanding into the EPL.' Then they lose out on the EPL and get their champions league rights taken from them. Hilarious.

Great... that means no decent HD channel to watch the games on. At least ESPN 2 showed the game in decent HD quality... especially the Champions League Final.

I'm wondering if the ridiculous amount of money spent on SEC and BCS football hamstrung them.

Early word is that Fox is in the process of upgrading FSC to HD. I'd just like any announcement so that we know what year this will be.

It's a wonder what a little research will do. 2010-11 is the first year of the new package.

I can't decide if I like this or not, frankly; is ESPN ditching the Champions League so they can concentrate on getting the EPL? Or are they backing out of soccer altogether?

Whatever. I don't care who shows me Lyon exiting in the Round of 16, CRon diving, and SAF bloviating. The more things change . . .

I just wonder what this means for televised games. ESPN now is showing two live games each match day with repeats on ESPNClassic and Deportes (might even be running three lives games w/ Deportes). FSC will just give us the one...but also the possibility of showing every game at some point during the week.

Plus, I hate ESPN. However, I must be the only one who loves Tommy Smyth. Yes, he's batshit crazy, but since my entire family is off-the-boat, batshit crazy Irishmen, I find him charming. Plus, the way he says Meelan is hilarious.

Well, Fox also got the Latin rights, which may mean Fox Sports en Es-pan-yol will do a second game.

Don't forget FSN. I randomly get EPL games reaired midweek on FSN Pittsburgh. There usually isn't anything of consequence going on that early in the day (exception of some baseball, sometimes).

that previous weekend's game aired on Wednesday on FSN was it for soccer in the states for years. helped me develop a loathing hatred for united before most people knew brand beckham

I agree with Whizz, I can't get behind the Tommy Smyth hatred. I pretty much like any soccer commentator with a cool accent, though.

Except the dude on GolTV...he bugs the shit out of me.

I can't even subscribe to FSC if I wanted to since I live in Canada...

I was able to watch the ESPN matches on TSN since the two channels are partly joint. I'm gutted.

Sucks. For a few weeks I have been getting a really decent quality, free feed on espn360 here at work. It did die last round forcing me to the Iraqis, but when it's up it's nice. I doubt FSC will be streaming and it is unlikely I will be near a TV midweek at 245pm.

Damn, no more HD! Maybe FSC will pony up and provide an HD channel. Here's hoping.

let's hold the horses on this one right now...Fox Sports has pulled the Jamie Trecker blog post that had confirmed the rumor.

Other sources are denying now.
