New Design/Format on Tonight's Fox Soccer Report

We here at UF sure do enjoy covering the goings on over on Fox Soccer Channel. First it was our world exclusive interview with Terri Leigh. Then, our coverage of the Champions League rights. And now, our sources tell us that tonight Fox Soccer Report is set to unveil a brand new graphic design package and format. Okay, might not be quite as newsworthy, but the folks at the Report appear quite happy with the change.

The new design has been described as less video game and more sky box. Somehow I imagine this means that Bobby McMahon will be giving the ol’ Barry Ferguson salute to the punters in the cheap seats.

And for the record, we are starting to come around to FSC’s coverage. For instance, just yesterday we were watching Sportscenter on the ESPN when one of the announcers, in referencing the match at Old Trafford, pronounced Villa as “Vi-ya,” i.e. the same way as David Villa. Say what you want about Fox Soccer, but they can at least get the absolute basics correctly. So, I'll probably be tuning in to the Report tonight, and I look forward to less eye-searing yellow-and-red graphics.

Elsewhere, the NY Times Goal blog weighs in on the Champions League TV rights, complete with Jeremy St. Louis quotes and an unclosed hyperlink (at least when I checked).

Can the new graphics pronounce "Birmingham" and "Middlesbrough"

As long as Carlos Machado continues to spike his hair a la Ronaldo, then I'm happy. His work with Paul Mitchell hair gel is not to be overlooked, and sometimes in fact exceeds his work in pronouncing the names of non EPL (continental) players.

Come on you FSC! Up the table! Pull a Wigan, a Villa, or a West Ham and get up there in quality.

"I would LOVE IT if you beat ESPN. Absolutely LOVE IT."

That Villa/Vi-ya thing isn't even the worst offense I've heard from the boys at TWWL, they did a number on Gerrard's name a few weeks back.

Last apparently Jan (Hard J) Hesselink's header won the league for Keltic and it made the top 10 plays.

The one that killed me during the Euros was "Peter" Cech rather than "Petr" Cech.... Minor quibble maybe, but c'mon he's one of the top goalkeepers in the world.

The new set isn't much of an improvement.

Yeah, still looks kinda shoestring. ON the plus side, I liked the new format -- seemed to place more emphasis on Bobby McMahon's analysis rather than the play-by-play.

Its better than it was, but that virtual plasma behind them does not belong. Brand with thoirds and bugs instead. Looks weird.

And someone on ESPN just described a amazing goal from Marcon Senna. What the fuck is a Marcon Senna?
