Champions League Open Thread: Where The World Prays for an Inter Victory

Welp, yesterday was a goalscoring orgy. So, get out your purity rings because we don't usually get two CL matchdays in a row like that. I still can't get over 7 goals from Bayern and Liverpool's stunning display of efficiency and skill, something they continually lack in league play and domestic cup action.

Half the field is set for quarterfinals with Liverpool, Chelsea, Bayern and Villareal all advancing and the other half will be set in about two hours time. The quarterfinal draw will be on March 20, 2009.

Champions...follow me after the jump.

Atletico v. Porto (2-2 Agg) - Porto will hope to salvage some Portuguese pride after Sporting's showing yesterday. Prediction...death. I mean no more Portuguese squads.

FC Porto: Helton, Sapunaru, Rolando, Bruno Alves, Cissokho, Lucho Gonzalez, Fernando, Raul Meireles, Lopez, Hulk, Rodriguez.
Subs: Nuno, Stepanov, Mariano Gonzalez, Costa, Madrid, Sektioui, Farias.

Atletico Madrid: Franco, Perea, Pablo, Ujfalusi, Antonio Lopez, Maxi, Paulo Assuncao, Raul Garcia, Simao, Sinama Pongolle, Aguero.
Subs: Coupet, Pernia, Heitinga, Maniche, Miguel, Camacho, Forlan.
--------------

Lyon v. Barcelona (1-1 Agg) - Barca will be out to prove its poor league form is in the past. Prediction...Catalans catapult to the quarters.

Barcelona: Valdes, Dani Alves, Marquez, Pique, Sylvinho, Xavi, Toure Yaya, Iniesta, Messi, Eto'o, Henry.
Subs: Pinto, Caceres, Keita, Hleb, Busquets, Victor Sanchez, Bojan.

Lyon: Lloris, Clerc, Cris, Boumsong, Grosso, Delgado, Juninho, Toulalan, Makoun, Ederson, Benzema.
Subs: Vercoutre, Bodmer, Kallstrom, Pjanic, Keita, Mounier, Tafer.
--------------

Arsenal v. Roma (1-0 Agg) - Will Arsenal end the season on fine form? The Magic 8 ball says: outlook Good.

Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Clichy, Toure, Gallas, Nasri, Denilson, Eboue, Diaby, Bendtner, Van Persie.
Subs: Fabianski, Djourou, Gibbs, Vela, Walcott, Song, Eduardo

Roma: Doni - Motta, Diamoutene, Juan, Riise - Brighi, Pizarro, Tonetto - Taddei, Vucinic, Totti.
Subs: Arthur, Loria, Aquilani, Gomez, Julio Baptista, Montella, Menez
--------------

Inter v. Man U (0-0 Agg) - The marquee matchup of the day. I hope ManU crashes out, but that will be a difficult challenge for Inter. I predict that a Portuguese male will be happy with the result.

Man Utd: Van der Sar, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Ronaldo, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Rooney, Berbatov.
Subs: Foster, Anderson, Park, Evans, Fletcher, Gibson, Tevez.

Inter Milan: Julio Cesar, Maicon, Cordoba, Samuel, Santon, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Vieira, Stankovic, Ibrahimovic, Balotelli.
Subs: Toldo, Maxwell, Figo, Cruz, Adriano, Muntari, Rivas.

Let's have fun out there folks.

Is anyone watching the game live? I know they have started ET.. because that is the frozen screen I see on 360.

Kevin said...

8 minutes played

Spectator said...

I was just going to ask where everyone went..... Suicide? Fallen asleep? Nope, malfunctioning feeds.

Precious Roy said...

My stream crapped out. Following on Gamecast and having a coronary.

I'll log off if it goes to PKs. I couldn't stomach it.

Sarah said...

I still have a working stream.

Don't know whether or not that's a good thing.

hockalees said...

Someone with a TV feed pls post timechecks... thx.

Spectator said...

Silver lining if Arsenal lose: Can concentrate on the FA Cup and getting 4th place. I know.... it's a reach.

Kevin said...

15th

Kevin said...

Break.

EbullientFatalist said...

Please, someone update me with the Arse-Roma match. I'm traveling, and the ATT 3G bullshit is fucking my day up.

hockalees said...

360 is back.. barely... five mins behind...

Kevin said...

18th min in ET. Nothing going on.

hockalees said...

Thx for updates Kevin... 360 is gone again.

Kevin said...

I think my feed is way behind because soccernet says it's in the 115th.

Spectator said...

Guardian seems to be the fastest.... 21st minute of ET, nothing going on except for deservedly snide comments about Arsenal.

Precious Roy said...

Gamecast: Roma look spent here. If Arsenal play their cards right here, surely there is a goal for them. I don't fancy their chances in pens TBH.

Me: Then they squandered a free kick.

Spectator said...

link to Guardian. They'll probably do a quick rundown of the pennos.

Spectator said...

And can I just say that it's insane that in the year 2009 none of us can watch this game live!

The NY Kid said...

I am home! Just in time for minute 23 of ET. Looks like PKs.

hockalees said...

it is "live" on Setanta at home right now. where I am not.

Precious Roy said...

Okay. I've got to Schrödering Cat the PKs. As long as I don't look until after it's over, Arsenal are 50% through.

phil said...

That's a good point, Spectator. The football coverage in the US is completely pisspoor.

Spectator said...

*sigh* Pennos it is. So who takes for Arsenal? Rvp, Eduardo, Nasri, Denilson, Walcott?

The NY Kid said...

and here we go. PKs for all the marbles.

Sarah said...

I don't know if I can handle this.

Spectator said...

I hope someone is showing Almunia an iPod right now.

The Fan's Attic said...

i know the english are bad at penalties, but how about the french?

shit, i just remembered the french did not do so well against the italians the last time in PKs.

The NY Kid said...

damn Trezeguet

Spectator said...

Dear lord please don't let it be Julio Baptista with the winning penno.

hockalees said...

@Spectator: Unfortunately, it is a shuffle.

Spectator said...

Oh boy, Eduardo.

Sarah said...

Oh god. This is why I hate penalties.

The Fan's Attic said...

not sure why exactly you put your designated PK taker in the 2 slot.

Kevin said...

Almunia saves the worst pk ever! holy shit that was bad.

Spectator said...

Hahahaha Vucinic.... We are back in this ting.

Nathaniel said...

Holy shit, how is this still going on at 6:25pm EDT? LOL. I clicked here to check the scores.

Kevin said...

Spectator said...

Spectator said...

Shit, 3-3. Oh no it's Denilson.

Precious Roy said...

Hey, my aborted comment go us to 300!

And my comment about my comment got us to 301.

jjf3 said...

Holy crap, that was one hell of a ride this afternoon from work.

Phil - I don't mind the Fulham love. This season has really made me hate some teams I had never even been indifferent about before. It's survival of the fittest, and if you ain't moving up the food chain, you're getting eaten. I'd prefer not to make my first trip to England be a trip to see a Blackburn-Norwich Colaship match...

And, yeah, bitches, we're 15th! FTW!!! (G-d, that's pathetic, but a few months in the drop zone lead to me yelling out loud at work when the 2nd goal happened...)

To be honest, I was glad to see I wasn't the only person on this site that could actually walk away happy today...congrats, you Gooners.

jjf3 said...

Oh, and props to UF for paginating on 2 straight days! Didn't your Mom tell you what would happen if you paginated all the time?

Oh, and that photo of CR should take the place of the Dutch toddler's "1-finger-salute" as the photo that never stops giving...

Jacob said...

I'm kinda glad I didn't have to sit through this today. Hell, I nearly had a heart attack waiting for the score to cycle on ESPN at 7.30.

"Yes, yes, I know Man U won...I know it was 2-0 aggregate. get moving.

"Porto-Villareal 0-0. Oh well for Porto. That keeper fumble really cost them No wait, I thought they were home first round. Good on them for not conceding, then.

"OK, here it is. 1-0 Roma . Fuck. Why is Roma highlighted? Is it because they won the whole tie? No, it's just because they won the match. So, it went to pennos, what happened? Oh my god it's changing....YESSSSSSSSSSS!"

was my inner dialogue over about 15 seconds.

jjf3 said...

U75:
I may have known this previously, but you're an Arsenal fan? Or just thought it was right?

Trust me, my memory is kind of a joke at this point...

Jacob said...

Substitute Atletico for Villareal above.

jjf3-
Yes, in a secondary sense. I am Aberdeen first and foremost, but Arsenal are the team I follow because I may actually be able to watch them. Therefore, I get lumped with the more full-fledged Gunners here.

Jacob said...

I guess I should say that I needed a team that I would actually be able to follow on TV through FSC and Champions League. My wife had tenuously been following Arsenal and I hopped on. Back in 2004.

jjf3 said...

U75:
No problem...

I remember being married, and if she'd been a Leed's fan, they'd probably be my 2nd favorite team. Fortunately for me, and all of us, she didn't even know what footie was...(thank you, G-d...though the next ex-Mrs-jjf3 may complain...)

That explains you being much more rational about Arsenal than some of your UF compatriots...I guess I just presumed you were a neutral after the comparison...

Jacob said...

I can see that. Though I definitely feel the pain with Arsenal much more than I want to at times. Can't complain too much. For a second team, they've given me plenty of smiles.

well done gunners. however if nasri hadnt been pants all day and rvp and toure took advantage of their chances we wouldn't have even needed extra time. UP THE ARSE!!!!!
