UF Quick Throw: Downing Move Request Denied. Spurs Quibble Over 1.5 million On Defoe.

So the Stewart Downing transfer saga is set to dominate January much like the Gareth Barry saga dominated the summer. Downing handed his written transfer request in after Spurs tabled an offer for the left winger, but Middlesbrough have refused to accept the request and will try to hang on to their star player. Downing signed a 5 year deal under a year ago and it is likely Boro are holding out for a silly offer. They are in a good position financially and don't really need to sell.

Stay tuned for this one to drrrrrrraaaaaaaaag.

In other transfer news, Spurs say that Portsmouth want too much for Jermaine Defoe. Harry Redknap has been gibbering non-stop about how much he misses his tiny forward and the BBC says the clubs differ in valuing Defoe by around 1.5 million. Now come on Tottenham, If you are willing to admit you made a mistake by selling one of your best players, you should be prepared to pay for that mistake when trying to re-sign him. This is the desperation of January and if Wayne Bridge is worth 10 million, then 16 Million should secure Defoe's signature. I am sure this one will be quicker than the Downing Saga (sounds like a Jeffrey Archer novel eh? Brad Pitt film to follow). Defoe missed Saturday's FA Cup game due to 'illness'. Yeah right! Ismellcash-itus is more like it!

There's also a matter of money still owed to Tottenham by Pompey from the Defoe, Kaboul, and Mendes deals. Apparently, Levy wishes to collect on those monies, while not over-paying for Defoe.

Are Tottenham fans and/or management just embarrassed by this whole situation?

I mean imagine Google deciding that their CFO (Defoe) was surplus to requirements in January 2008 and then the COO (Berbatov) and CEO (Keane) could also go in the summer of 2008. Then replace them with a Senior Vice President who perhaps can't step up to the next C-Level (D Bent) and bring in a foreigner from another industry - say Pfizer's CFO (Pav) and then realize less than 12 months later - fuck - we need to bring Defoe back.

Are these board room guys wankers or what? Someone? Anyone?

Apologies for the terrible business analogy.

by "board room guys" do you mean the CFO, CEO, COO, etc. that you mentioned in your analogy? if so, then the answer is yes, they are wankers.

if meant the real Spurs boardroom, then the answer is yes, they are wankers.

The only thing that could possibly embarrass a Spurs fan would be to awake one day and find himself an Arsenal fan.

In all seriousness, however, I fully acknowledge that Spurs' were quite hamfisted in the way they quickly divested themselves of three quality forwards, only to hand the reins to Bent and Pavlyohwhatsit.

I personally was gutted when Defoe left. Levy knew that he was selling at least Berbatov so selling Defoe was a just foolish. I am sure Commoli had a say in the sale as he had a say in all of our daft maneuverings but I would pay the 1.5 difference
and welcome JD back with open arms.

..and I am not sold on Downing. Maybe he doesnt get a fair shake as he plays for an "unfashionable" side but from trolling the Boro boards it seems their supporters would sell him in a heartbeat for 10-12

I'm not sold on Downing, either. We need a DM, not another winger to hoof in wild crosses. Rumor is Appiah will be in for a look-see.

"BentPav"? Is this the reincarnation of BerbaKeane?

If so, have I just not been paying attention or has BentPav, nee BerbaKeane, been gone for a while?

Or has our WanderingBear just come home?

"BentPav" has been here before, presuming he's actually "BerbaKeane" reincarnated, but I couldn't come up with the right joke...
