Goodbye, Will

Without getting too maudlin, let's just say that UF will miss the work of Will Leitch at Deadspin. We met in the comments section there, and his voice is the reason any of us bothered to be on that site in the first place.

From the fine fellows at Melt Your Face Off, comes this winsome tribute.

Goodbye, Will. Enjoy your corporate money.

Sven's not quite RIP material yet. We still hear from him regularly. When the EPL starts back up, I'm sure you'll see updates there.

Thank god you don't have to get approved to comment on this here blog. If so, I'd still be trying to make the cut. I can't believe my "Packer? I hardly knew her!" comment on this post didn't get me approved at Deadspin.

Don't you guys ever leave us.

Beginning in August, at the start of the EPL season, all comments will be moderated and commenters will be required to audition. We will have no more of this loutishness.

Ah, fuck it. You guys (and ladies!) can stay.

What about BerbaKeane?

Don't push it. Although The Likely Lad will probably need him around for support.

I know exactly why my comment(s) never got posted on deadspin. I'm just not funny or snarky.

//proves my point

Seeing as how we can barely manage our content -- and I mean that in a good way! -- I can't see us ever being in a position to moderate comments!

I speak only for myself here, but as much as I love Deadspin and am indebted to the site for getting me involved in UF, Will's "passing" has felt inevitable for quite some time. The good/bad part of blogging is that it is so personality-driven, and sometimes those personalities get burnt out or move on to other things. Definitely part of the "biz," but I wonder if sports blogs can maybe find a more sustainable model? Maybe something along the lines of group blogging/open forum? (*ahem!*)

Like it or not, Deadspin fulfilled a purpose. It got us here, and it brought the world of sports somewhere different as well.

Without it, I wouldn't have made the connections that led me to my current job, nor would this blog have begun.

I will pour one out for the fallen homie tonight. In the meantime... soccer goes on forever. We should probably write about it

I will miss Will over at Deadspin, but since I have spent about 99% of my internet time the last 3 years on a company laptop that could be taken away at any time (along with my job), I've never been comfortable enough there to post quick-hitting snark with a "saved" identity, and since my quick-hitting snark seems to be a rarely-appearing thing, I never got approved. But, hey, I got a red T-shirt with his Che Guevara-style mug on it!! Oh, and it kills about 2 hours of my workday by itself, which is even better (by an exponential amount)...

Anyways, no matter where Deadspin goes from here, finding UF via Deadspin will serve as a wonderful reminder of what the internet is capable of doing...

uniting a bunch of crazy footie fucks.

And if that wasn't what the internet was invented for, well, then it really was solely created for porn...

jjf3--There's certainly room for both porn and footie here.

My comments never made it on DS either, God forbid that I may actually be critiical and call someone out for writing a load of shite filled with inaccurate bollocks.

Fug em all I say.

goat - no argument here...I just feel better thinking there might have been some completely pointless "higher calling" involved...
If that ultimately happens to be Sylvie Van de Vaart's boobs, that's still better than Will getting richer than me (and all MSM-like, too...)

Bigus -
I politely suspect that your chosen name and attitude might have played a TINY part in your rejection on DS...

That said, keep rolling here...

And yet Hugh G. Rection got accepted.

What's in a name?. Actually I used a normal name and just wanted to express my dissapointment at the garbage that replaced David Hirshey. Still...if free speech is not wanted over there then I shall take the hint and excercise it here.

Will, Rob, and Rick, allowing for their skills (or not), this entire country is ultimately "dumbing down"...No one said the actual smart ones were getting accepted to the party...I like it here at UF more...
