TFA's Dilemma

The Fan's Attic is in a pickle. He needs UF readers to help him figure out how to proceed in this delicate situation.

Here's the background.

Yours truly, TFA, is on a men's league soccer team. The team has gone through several iterations and one name change, but TFA has been with the squad since 2003 and is the longest tenured player. I don't have a leadership or managerial role with the squad. So, I just have seniority.

Recently, the team discussed getting new uniforms. One of our players works for Adidas and offered to get us cheap Spanish National Team Jerseys. Sounds great, right?

Well, I show up to one game and the jersey I receive is an El Tri jersey. That's right, the Mexican National Team kit. TFA is a red blooded American soccer fan and this puts me out to no end. I have nothing against Mexico, except for its national team.

So what is TFA supposed to do about this? I really don't want to wear the El Tri jersey, not to mention it has 3/4 length sleeves which look awful. Ugh. There are some Hispanic players on the team and I don't want to offend them either, if they happen to be Mexican. Llet me know if I am completely offbase with my issue.

Help a blogger out. Please.

I didn't know that Borgetti visited the site!

thankfully, we only got the jerseys.

Ok. You design a new logo for the team. Present it in an excited fashion, get a badge made and have Mrs TFA stitch the new badge onto all of the jerseys.

Approach it from a club level. You'd love to wear the same national kit as Cesc, but couldn't stand to wear any kit associated with Spurs (Dos Santos). That's the better way to handle.

Wait, this could be your chance to launch an international goodwill ambassador campaign, by adopting mehico as your southern soccer brother from another mother. You will need to sharpen your political IQ, or at least become well versed on the 'benefits' of NAFTA.

Alternatively, Americanize the jersey and chop off the sleeves.

Kieth, I guess you're not aware that young gooner Carlos Vela is also a member of the Mexican national team. So, the club level approach you suggest would appear slightly contradictory.

the team is doing a fundraiser for new jerseys next month...so maybe it will all resolve itself and we can get rid of these abominations.

There's absolutely no way to rationalize this. No self-respecting Man U fan with a spine (should there be one) would be caught dead in a Liverpool jersey, or vice versa, even if it was the jersey of choice for their men's league club. So why is the prospect of donning el tri even remotely acceptable?
I'm not saying burn the thing - keep it friendly. "Pull a hamstring" in warm-up of your first game, then offer to take them home and wash them for everyone, and then give them all to charity. You miss the first game but your pride is intact and you helped the needy in this trying time. Everyone's a winner.

And Vela should start every game.

You had to know we'd all pick "burn it on the pitch prior to the match" right?

The worst part about it isn't even the fact that its a Mexico jersey, but the fact that its got those stupid ass sleeves.

But here in Colorado, I'd just grin and bear it, simply because half the people in soccer leagues are mexican and I'd get my ass kicked. Plus colorado has its fair share of hot mexican chicks and that'd probably score some points with them.

No, the worst part of it is that it is a Mexico strip. I can push the sleeves up.

I did know the burning option would be quite popular, but the rational option (revealing concern) did quite well for a while.
