Time to party in Madrid

Congratulations to Spain on winning their second European Championship today. Aside from the first 20 minutes of the game, Germany were never really in it, and Spain controlled play easily. The finish from Torres was top drawer, and will provide ample spank bank material for LB for the next few months. Senna once again marshaled the Spanish defense, and hopefully the rumors linking him to Arsenal are true.

We'll have some more meta tournament thoughts tomorrow, but certainly Euro 2008 was a huge improvement over the past few World Cups and European Championships. For the most part, everyone tried to play attacking football, and negative cynical bullshit teams like Italy and Greece got what was coming to them. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for the upcoming season, and looking a bit further, to South Africa in 2010.
And here is the rest of it.

Yeah, that Gomez Kuranyi combo up top at the end of the game was scintillating....

I'm so happy about this! I've dealt with far too many sports disappointments lately, so this is a welcome deviation from the norm. Maybe I'm not actually cursed...and maybe the Cubs really will win the World Series this year...*cough*

can figure out how to link to bbc videos but on their football page theres an interview with torres and they asked him about lahm on the goal. said it was the biggest mistake of lahm's career, epic shit talking. and his english is getting pretty good.

cliche as it may be, the power has definitely shifted from france and italy to spain. and thank god for that.

There's the Torres vid...that cheeky scouser

Does anyone here not like Torres? I was just curious, because it seems like every footie fan I know loves him, even if they don't like Liverpool.

As long as Liverpool keep finishing in 4th in the EPL, what's not to love about Torres?

Sarah said...

Haha, amen to that.

Although if I'm honest, I'd be okay with Liverpool finishing second. Better them than Chelski and Man United. But that's just me.

personally im shocked that roy took that shot while overlooking the criticism of the greatest team ever assembled, this years italy squad.

Sarah, I like Torres because I love Ateltico Madrid and saw him play with them. He was head and shoulders above the rest, even at such a young age. Probably, maybe, the best player I have seen play live.

Also, the Dick Advocaat Award for Worst Substitute of the Tourney goes to...

Yogi Low!

tss...Kevin freakin Kuranyi

I know Klose shied from the ball after getting kicked in his, but bringing in Kuranyi and Gomez was the sign of Dr. Lo(e)w capitulating the final.

He might have actually been better served by subbing off his skipper

Also- Smeets wins the Pick 'em, your intrepid Villan commenter finishes in a 4-way second-place tie.

Enough with the Torres man love. I'd like to blame Jens for the goal, at least in part. It seemed like Lahm was matching Torres stride for stride but pulled back when he saw Lehmann come out. I think Lahm should have gone ahead and tackled Torres even if it meant kicking Jens in the face but that's just me.

I wish Guiza had gotten a kick to the face at some point. Love Spain but does that man ever have a face begging to be hit.

Sorry, I guess that's been weighing on me for a while now.

I agree with Goat. Lehmann didn't have the howler that I thought he would, but he did overcommit on Torres and then wasn't in a position to block the shot. That said, it was a fantastic individual effort by Torres (yes, I love him too), and Spain deserved the win -- not least of all because Germany couldn't even manage a single, measly goal.

I wasn't actually expecting someone to agree with me. I just wanted to stir up a shitstorm.

I won the Pick'em :D

I actually picked Spain because I wanted germany to win the final and I thought...well, at least if they won't win, I might still win the Pick'em
