CL Open Thread

Oh sweet tap-dancing Ronaldo, it's CL time again!

Some decent matches today, including Real Madrid's scramble right now to hang on to a win at Zenit St. Petersburg. If their defending skills were a TV show, they'd be cancelled after the pilot.

Will Man United draw once again? Will a French team win a game? Can BATE get anything at home to Juventus?

Snark and cheer along after the jump, along with the fixture list and selected lineups.

GROUP E
AaB vs. Man Utd
Villarreal vs. Celtic

GROUP F
Bayern Munich vs. Lyon
Fiorentina vs. Steaua Bucuresti

GROUP G
Arsenal vs. FC Porto
Fenerbahce vs. Dynamo Kiev

GROUP H

=====
FULL TIME SCORE:
Zenit St Petersburg 1 - (Danny 25")

"Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear. Cristiano Ronaldo charges down the AaB keeper's kick and the ball spins to Dimitar Berbatov - who volleys wide with the goal gaping. An absolute sitter."

Sounds about right.

"Bad news for United fans. Paul Scholes is stretchered off holding his knee after a clumsy tackle from Thomas Augustinussen. Ryan Giggs is on. "

reached for comment, God responded 'well its a shame it happened but i owed them four or five'

BATE! BATE! BATE!

How do I work in an Idiocracy quote?

Jim Hendry said...

that is fucking awesome. Juventus could use a good BATEing

BackBergtt said...

cant stop scoring, bateing

Jim Hendry said...

Alex Manninger, formerly of Arsenal, is the Juve goalie by the way. That makes BATE's accomplishments only slightly less impressive.

No goals in the Norwich game if anyone cares. Sibierski had one cleared of the line after it hit the bar.

Lyon up through Pernambu.

Arsenal up from van Persie sliding goal.

BackBergtt said...

juve within one, willing to bet it was not momo

Iaquinta, I think.

Jim Hendry said...

Lyon goal was an oggie by Demichelis

Sky Sports live ticker still begs to differ. Pernambucano, to spell it all the way out.

Gamecast's commentary before and after RVP's goal. It was interesting given the immediate result:

29' On the edge of the box Fabregas picked a diagonal run from Adebayor who squared the ball back across the goal for the on-running Van Persie who stabbed the ball home from five yards. A really neat, well worked goal.
29' Goal for Arsenal!
28' Adebayor has dropped deep and is offering himself as a target and link-up man for Nasri and Denilson on the left wing. Which is great, but that leaves only Van Persie up front.

BackBergtt said...

greatest foot in mouth gamecast moment is the 06 fa cup when the guy says gerrard is on one leg and they are playing essentially without him, then he immediately crushes the equalizer with a minute left

i stick to the bbc play by play personally, gives all the games at once

Sky Sports has owned up to the OG, at least in the text, still showing otherwise in their stats.

Jim Hendry said...

BBC has it as an oggie in the livetext, then as a Juninho goal on their live scores page. Haven't seen this sort of confusion since the Luis Garcia goal against Chelsea in the CL

"Haven't seen this sort of confusion since the Luis Garcia goal against Chelsea in the CL"

it didnt go over the line

2-0 in London. Adebayor header off of a corner kick.

Jacob said...

Halftime 2-0 Arsenal lead.

Jim Hendry said...

Arse up 3-0, Berbatoss scores Man Utd's second goal, Juve are level with BATE, and the Celtic wall just dissolved as Villarreal take the lead 1-0.

Also, Bayern equalized, and Norwich are down 2-0 and down to 10 men at Southampton. Cheer up Bigus!

Jim Hendry said...

... aaand Arsenal score again. What's with them playing well in Europe right after dropping 3 points to a crap EPL team?

4 - 0 Arsenal

Silly challenge on Bendtner and Adebayor nets the pen.

Vela on for Walcott

Ade and van Porcelain are trading goals like they're some kind of footballing MCA/Mike D combo. Does that make Cesc Adam Horvitz? Discuss.

dammit. . Horowitz.

And Juve let in two for one reason. . .no Mellberg in the lineup.

Shouldn't the "Three Jewish MCs" question be posited towards Spurs?

JT - I know what you mean. If they weren't so French, I'd think they were Liverpool...

Andrew- That would assume that Spurs players can trade goals back and forth. Even Berba, Keane and Defoe found that hard sledding in the white and navy
