Saturday's FA Cup Third Roundup

Being able to wake up on a Saturday morning and watch a match broadcast from Gloucestershire.... that's just a thing of beauty, really, and thankfully it was a compelling match between Derby and Forest Green to boot. Forest Green should be proud despite losing 4-3, with their three goals all top class. Yes, it was an entertaining day in the FA Cup Round Three, now that the big boys have started playing.

As Bigus noted below, Citeh's blushes continue, but they weren't alone. Chelsea let Southend equalize in the 90th minute to set up a dreaded replay. Peterborough also earned a draw against Prem bottomdwellers West Brom, Pompey went nil-nil against Bristol, and struggling Stoke City were knocked out of the cup by Hartlepool. Elsewhere, Sunderland beat Useless Bolton, Hull-Newcastle ended in a bore scoreless draw, and Fulham defeated Sheffield Wednesday.

Most important of all, Norwich earned a replay against Charlton, and Arsenal knocked off the green scum of Plymouth Argyle.

At the moment Liverpool are up 1-0 against Preston and look comfortable.

Tomorrow it's Gillingham versus Aston Villa and Southampton against Man U. Monday is Conference League North side Blyth Spartans against Blackburn Rovers. Will the dream continue?

If anyone watched the City game, please let me know how Paul Anderson looked for NF

Why does soccernet insist Riera's name is Alberto? It's Albert, and frankly I think that is pretty damn racist to just chuck vowels onto a guys name because he is Spanish.

Ruh roh ... looks who's back!

Babel should be sitting for the next couple. He looked like total shit today.

given that performance, i wouldn't be surprised to see Babel transferred.

the Alonso and Mascherano injuries are a bit worrisome.

no Benayoun - in the team OR on the bench - just due for a rest or is he on his way out of town?

Paul Anderson? What's the interest there Georger?

Good for Norwich, Southend, and Forest.

I missed everything since I was in the midst of moving, but it sounds like it was a rollicking first round; any major injuries - aside from the ones to Liverpool?

Or third round even

EbullientFatalist said...

yeah, third round. helpful.

He belongs to Liverpool.

Shame Gillingham lost to Villa - they deserved a replay, and that pen was very questionable...

Saints look pretty good for the first 15 mins, but their backline doesn't really seem to sense how much danger ManU presents - they seem bound to get picked apart. Like just now - Anderson just saved by the keeper. And the resulting corner gives ManU the goal - great save by the keeper, but it goes straight to Welbeck's head.

jjf3 said...

They just showed the replay, and Welbeck was offsides when the initial ball was headed goalward. Too bad for Southampton...

jjf3 said...

Saints really don't seem to have any idea how to deal with Berbatov's positioning, and they repeatedly leave attacking mids unmarked while Berbs picks them apart...

And a Terry-esque foul knocks Saints down to 10 men on a straight red.

EbullientFatalist said...

Paterson's red was deserved. Even if it did involve Vidic.

agreed

Utd are getting all the calls, even when the calls go against them. The yellow on Evans should've been a red; it was a purely cynical challenge meant only to bring the Saints forward down.

jjf3 said...

I agree that Evans intent was cynical, but I'd be surprised to see that as a straight red in most EPL games.

Utd v. Spurs in the 4th round (right round, Matt?).

Ahh....of course, how syupid of me. Paul Anderson, well known fact that he from Liverpoo! Well I asked because I've seen him play him play twice this season and he looked quite good. But Premier league good? Not close!

Hes only 20 now, but he was huge was Swans last season and was injured to start the year, from what I've seen of him he has a shot at breaking into the roster next year.
Adam Hammill was playing for Blackpool but his loan is up and Rafa is debating keeping him up, hes 20 too.

Either way, even if they don't make it, I'm sure someone would like to have a pair of tricky British wingers.
