Quick Throw: Obafemi sacrifices body for EPL's sacrificial lamb

With Newcastle in the grip of a relegation fight that they'll probably lose*, striker Obafemi Martins has done something rather brave: he's postponing a much-needed groin surgery to try and help them stay up. Never mind that he could suffer long-term damage as a result... I mean, the only healthy striker for the Magpies right now is Michael Owen, so they need all the help they can get.

He won't play every single minute, but will try his best to contribute off the bench wherever possible.

Best of luck, Oba.

PS. I completely forgot that Martins played for Inter Milan. A real head-scratcher, that.

*(sorry folks, every few years, the EPL has to sacrifice one of its bigger soccer markets in order to satisfy the headline-writers... can't just keep yo-yoing West Brom, after all)

Quick Throw: Gooners rejoice as Toffee comes unstuck

Besides applauding my wit in crafting headlines, all the Gooners can breathe a sign of relief that their key rivals in the fight for 5th have just lost their Fabregas.

Everton will be without Mikel Arteta for at least 6 months due to ACL damage that requires surgery, and David Moyes admits it's bad.

"Injuries are part of football but what we'll miss is that we don't have the squad or numbers to do it. You've got to have the numbers, and that's where our problem comes."
And so, we bid adieu to Everton in the hunt for Top 5. Now all we need is Villa to receive some bad news from their physio (Keith: laying low since losing to Chelsea?), and the collective misery will be complete.

Then, we can all weep at the feet of the wretched Satanism emanating from Old Trafford.

UF Quick Throw: Three Weeks For Adebayor

Same as Steive G. It's it's a three week vacation for Emmanuel Adebayor. Not good for the Gunners, but not devastating as, since getting his raise, the Togolese striker has been underwhelming. At least Wenger has the correct assessment of the situation: "We have plenty of strikers."

Dear God Do Not Watch This

Sports is dangerous.

And it might be a small wonder that with athletes getting bigger, faster, and stronger all the time that devastating injuries don't happen more often.

After the jump is a skiing injury suffered over the weekend by Matthias Lanzinger of Austria. I beg of you not to watch it (especially the second half of the video that is in slow-motion).

Lanzinger had part of his leg amputated as a result of the injuries. What's this got to to with football? Not much, but as bad as the Eduardo injury was, this is a reminder that it could have been worse. Much, much worse.

Eduardo will walk again and most people in the know (doctors presumably) anticipate his playing again.

Lanzinger is not so fortunate. Again, fair warning has been given. This is gruesome.

A Lighter Moment

We have, admittedly, been a little taken with the Eduardo story and injuries over the last few days. After the jump, a lighter moment from the world of footballing injuries. All thanks to Tuffy for the link.
