If it's surgery to remove an ingrown toenail then it makes sense. I've had that done, and while it's an outpatient procedure, they cut off a chunk of your skin so they can chisel out all the nail that has grown under the skin. If you hit something like say ... a soccer ball ... soon after, you'd shit yourself in pain.
I'm with MG. I had multiple ones done when I played tennis in my youth, and contact would be the absolute last thing you would want to experience afterwards...
